Contrary to popular belief, throwing garbage out your window does NOT actually make it disappear. I picked up this garbage off of a stretch of road that was only 2/10 of a mile long….and only on one side of the road! Coffee cups, beer cans, slim Jim wrappers, energy drinks, all your typical “send fuel” for skiers and boarders up canyon.
We have to do better than this.
These canyons are YOUR canyons. One of the draws of this city is the beauty of these mountains RIGHT in our backyards. If we are going to love these mountains as much as we do, we have to take better care of them.
So I proposed a canyon cleanup day. We started early and hiked up the canyon road and picked up all the trash on the road left behind by those who don’t quite seem to get it….
3.3 miles of road trash in Little cottonwood canyon later….7 bags of garbage.
Cans, cups, straws, plastic bags, candy wrappers, tissues, lots of Ski gloves, T-shirt, shorts, lots of socks, 2 ball caps, a top hat, pair of vans, bike chain, a broken bong, a bullet, fireworks, empty glass beer bottles, broken beer bottles, empty bottle of vodka, bag of mystery drugs, 3 full bottles of chemicals, perfume, Christmas bows, hair ties w/ flowers, an entire side view mirror, copper wires, car parts, condom box, 3.5 hubcaps, balloon string, sunglass lenses, you name it, it was on the canyon road.
You can’t just get mad, you gotta do something about it. If anyone wants to help me w projects like this, I think we could make it super fun! It’s a good way to get outside, be in the mountains, and do some do-gooder stuff 🙂
